| 2 of my older Silkies are in need of some feather trimming around the eyes. How does one go about doing this? Dawn in DE aka Gothy |
Folks;
I recently read a suggestion on how to keep both hawks and starlings out of your yard. the writer said to get a owl decoy with a swivel head. the head moves around in the wind and the decoy looks "alive".
I haven't tried this yet but do have a decoy on order.
Has anyone out there tried this?

> Shelley, Thank you. Sounds free range to me. Joking around, I asked my parents if they wanted me to clay pigeon practice in their back yard in a week and a half. (2 wks is what when heart dr said I could fire my shotgun.) We'd let their chickens out and I would just accidentally pick off the huge hawks when the hawks tried to get their chickens. My parent's and my chickens cannot go outside of their covered pens. Seems so unfair to the hens, though they get cooked food that smelled like a luscious dinner when it was cooking today. Cathryn

> Know what you mean - I have a Rottie who 'runs' the place. She loves everyone. I do believe that she would 'love' to eat my chickens, however, the fact that it would make me unhappy stops her. Instead, she chases off coons and stray dogs and protects the hens just as if she were second in line to eat them. Haha - silly dog.

> I currently have 8 laying hens, for their first laying season they have given me enough eggs for a family of four, plus eggs to give to my parents, and adult kids, plus I sell a few dozen a week for a buck a dozen to break even on feed. I feed laying mash, plus kitchen scraps, plus free range when weather permits and I'm home. (does that count as 'free' range??)
