Re: [CHICKENS-101] All purpose feed? does it exist

Most dog and cat food on the grocery store shelves has by product in it. If the feed says by product I don't buy it, dry or canned. I get my dog food at the feed store and make sure it doesn't have that. The brand I like is "chicken soup for the dog lovers soul". Nothing off label or weird in that food and it isn't that much more expensive. My dogs thrive on it. I hate to see what my kennel boarders bring for their dogs to eat. Some of the very cheapest brands full of grain filler. No wonder their dogs are fat! Yuk!

Well, you know I never worried about this too much since I don’t bring mine into the house!  LOL!

Now, I can tell you the green spit stains of the alpaca and llama can be treated the same!  (and they both stink)

Re: [CHICKENS-101] All purpose feed? does it exist

I have not lost any birds to feed issues.  I did however lose three goats this spring.  I don't know what killed them because I can't afford the necropsies but I was feeding them feed from a local feed mill.  Shirley

Pete, OMG you are right, putrina killed my beautiful silkies, promised me they'd pay for them,  their dealers have bad mouthed me, and putrina never paid me for my birds even though I have necropies and feed tests. Cath

OMG here we go again .... lets stick with the short version. Some have
lost stock to tainted feed and Purina was that feed. However many use
it with no ill effects.

The gang's all here!  Cath, Linda, and Dixie from Michigan.  Di, Judy and Marie from Florida.

The house is full of chickens and ducks.  They are in the laundry room, the living room, kitchen and the dining room!  Some roosters are having a 'Who can crow the loudest' contest and it' 12:45 am!    LOL, somebody throw a blanket over those dudes!

Petals was thrilled to meet Dixie, Lacy was sort of "meh" about houseguests of the canine variety but is sure enjoying all the people petting her.

Tomorrow we will take pictures!  And sort chickens.  And learn to AI!

Re: [CHICKENS-101] All purpose feed? does it exist

Would an all-purpose feed be a good thing, though? It seems to me that
there would be kind of a "super feed" for the layers. Those poor hens
are always pregnant, you know? If you keep birds for show and
breeding, the focus of the feed wouldn't be making sure the chicken is
healthy enough to lay all the time. If they're meat birds, there would
be a different focus for nutrients.

Which brings me to a question I've been meaning to ask. Every creature
is what it eats, and is only as healthy as the food that goes into it.
(She says, sipping diet coke.) Would it make sense to mix your own
feed? This struck me when I was researching animal food. Even with the
best of ingredients, the whole factory aspect of it bothers me. Heat
from friction destroying nutrients, the machine part of it makes me
think of oil getting into the feed, and other problems inherent in the
manufacture of food on a large scale.
