Dear Cathryn , Do you raise heritage pigs in Michigan? Do you consume local, sustainably raised Michigan pork products? If so, you're ability to do so may be in jeopardy. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has recently been sued for a new controversial "invasive species order" about "feral" pigs. Unfortunately, DNR's invasive species order is drafted too broadly and contains no exemptions for heritage pigs or sustainable farming. The order essentially outlaws all pig farming except that in industrial-scale factory farms. Heritage pig breeders and small scale organic farmers will likely be violating the new order without knowing it and may be subject to criminal prosecution under the rule. The Center for Food Safety is concerned that, among other things, the DNR may enforce the invasive species order against Michigan heritage pig breeders and farmers, and that consumers of local organic and sustainably raised meats will not be able to support these products and family farms. CFS is looking for information from members: 1) who breed or raise heritage pigs for personal or commercial purposes; and/or 2) purchase and consume organic, sustainable and Michigan-produced pork or meat products. Time is of the essence so please contact us as soon as possible if you have information or are able to help out in this vital state effort. If you meet these criteria, then you could be very helpful in this ground-breaking effort. Please email office@centerforfoodsafety.org or call 415-826-2770 as soon as possible to learn more. Thank you for everything you do, Center for Food Safety |
