You might want to find out if there's a Free-Cycle group in your area--they use e-mail lists to ask for items such as the egg cartons, as well as pass along things. I've seen several egg carton requests on our local Free-Cycle.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Molting

what about using a hot water bottle for her in her own crate in the corner with her friend....you can cover it enough  that it won't burn her, or only put in warm water...that way she will have a warm spot .......the other thing that you could do is put fleece material, or sheep fleece, in the crate for warmth...i agree that it doesn't seem to be molting, but cruel treatment from the old girls who won't even let her on the perch to sleep...i know it's nature's way, but it really makes me sad

Get a box put a water dish in it and a feed dish, and bring her into the house where she will be warm and safe. The temps in the North East are suppose to go to extreme lows like -20*. She will not last with any kind of low temp with no feathers. I doubt she is moulting it is more likely that she is picked on by the other chickens and they have pulled her feathers out, chickens do not usually moult this last in the year.

Whoopsy; I'm confused. What is the risk of taking a chicken inside?

I've always wondered why nature makes chickens molt when it's the coldest part of year. When one of my hens molted recently I went down to the coop at night and placed her in the middle of the roost line so she could keep warm between the other hens. She would stand in the sun to get warm during the day. But this is Alabama and it wasn't colder than 28 during her molt. At 16, I would bring her in for protection. Some people may think it's okay to take the risk, but I probably wouldn't. What about a chicken sweater?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Molting

Marg,

If you have a local vet, I'd call and inquire about the situation. Although I was raised around chickens, I have only had chickens again for a year. But I never remember seeing one molt that much at one time.

For keeping her warm, I would put a heat lamp in the coop and close the door at night. My girls all huddle together on the perch at night anyway. The heat lamp would provide extra warmth for her. You could also add some extra shavings, straw, or hay to your nesting boxes. She might get in there.

I'm not sure that I would bring her in the house. Although it is the logical solution to provide more warmth for her, I am concerned about secondary issues. It might also stress her to be separated from the rest of her flock, especially when she will still be able to hear them but not be able to get to them. The vet should have some great solutions for you.

We're in upstate NY and we have a year and a half old chicken who's molting now.  She's got almost no feathers left on her back.  She's going to get awfully cold in this weather with no feathers.  Will she be okay, or should we do something like take her into the house at night if the temp is going to fall below 30 or so?  It's supposed to be 22 tonight and going down to 16 on Monday.
