Actually, I have a LGD myself. TWO of them! And my neighbor has THREE! Well, of course, they are not registered LGD, but their jobs are to protect the livestock. My big dog is a Border Collie/Golden mix. and his ferocious side kick is a Skipperkee. My neighbor has three big black dogs that were on death row at the pound. if my dogs 'go off' in the night, we're up with the flashlight immeadiately. We have coyotes, foxes, even weirdos. If our neighbors dogs 'go off', same thing. we have our running shoes on. There is nothing in the world wrong with a dog that's on duty, barking when necessary. Then quieting back down after the danger has passed. No one would complain about that. Most people get upset when the barking is non-stop, night after night and they can't sleep. I understand that.
We have another neighbor (SOMEwhere) that has some sort of a hound dog that will 'go off' from time to time. He doesn't do it very often, and it's almost entertaining to listen to him since we so seldom hear him.

I have a few that rarely bark and others that bark a lot more, I have close neighbors and I bring most of my dogs inside at night and the quieter ones have night duty, some in the dog runs behind my bedroom, the dog runs adjoin the goat and chicken area, so the dogs are right next to the goats and chickens and can see/hear what's going on, a couple dogs usually patrol the other side of the property but if they start barking a lot I bring them inside.
