Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Challenge a fox

I didn't know it was a fatal wound until she died.!  We were nursing her and she seemed to be recovering from her wounds, eating, pooping, etc. then I check on her and she was dead  Believe me if she looked like she were in any kind of distress we would have put her down.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Eggstremely happy

Since I don't have any chickens that I don't care about (certainly wouldn't
put any of my pets through this!) I would either spend the time to do the
necessary positive reinforcement to train the dog not to jump towards any
animal ....or I'd just buy a shock collar. Give the "NO" command and a mild
shock as the dog doesn't obey the command, any further disobedience gets a
stronger shock, and so on.

If you want to go a really old training route, tie a dead chicken around the
dog's neck and let it stay there 'til it rots. Supposed to guarantee that
the dog will never look at another chicken. Of course no one can stand to be
around the dog either. The dog "trainer" who gave me that sage old advice
20 years ago also told me to pee on a dog's head to make it stay at home.
Since my dogs sleep in my bedroom (besides which my "aim" isn't very good),
I declined to use either method of training. *very big grin*

I am working with a bluetick puppy on this same behavior. It's so
exasperating....the puppy will go in the goat pen and play with the babies
without hurting anyone, but the first thing out of the house, she has to
hurl herself at the closest pen (chickens or goats) scaring the bejeebies
out of everyone. Positive reinforcement training hasn't been working well
100% of the time, although she IS a lot better and at least now looks guilty
after she does it (admitting you have a problem is the first step
towards fixing it, right? *grin*).

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Chickens chasing squirrels!

Mine have and if they are exposed to any young squirrels your chickens will probably kill them. They are like a rodent. When my girls were free ranging they killed frogs, toads, young squirrels, bugs, and any other small prey they could chase. Ours are fed a well balanced 18% feed on top of free ranging so it's not a hunger issue just nature. Chickens are like small feathered vilocoraptors. They love to chase and they love playing "football". The cats and kittens here are safe they've only gotten warning pecks to teach them manners.
We also have buff orps, plus old english game bantams, sumatras, and ducks among some various others.
Good luck and enjoy the show I guess.

We had introduced 3 new Buffs to our flock of 4 year old ladies a few months ago.The "youngsters" are going on 6 months old. Today all 3 discover squirrels.

They were chasing one poor thing all around the yard! Then when it ran up a tree they stood under it looking up, making all sorts of clucking and brawking sounds. The older ladies never pay attention to the squirrels or the cats. In fact, the young ones don't pay any attention to our cats, either. So why they are chasing the squirrels is a mystery. Have an of your hens taken up squirrel chasing as a sport?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] god daughter called and needs work

I so agree Cathryn, and would be very greatful to have one or two that would or could help me with the coops alone, let alone mowing the yard, between interviews and school I have enough time to sleep, eat, and do my homework.....and the laundry I have to have clean for those things......I am wondering if I should just give up on my garden even this year.....I spent two hours yeaterday pulling the weeds and grass from the 30'x30' garden that had popped up TONS of that  over two weeks, yes I said two weeks.. I got foolish this year and went to extreme with corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, sunflowers, peppers, broccoli, watermelon, beans peas...and I think a few more....I am ging blank.....Two weeks were best I could do between mid terms and applying to the few colleges I am working oin the finish my Bachelors.... I have gained two scholorships, but will still be in hole around 20k per year, if I get in where I want. it is one of top colleges for Business
Management and Accounting........I think I SOOO need a vacation.....

Erin, I run out of breath and strength.  Very frustrating.  I run out of money too, but it's better to be broke and have clean barns and pen yards.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] How long is too long when feeding grass?

When I feed grass, I always cut it into lengths no more than 3-4 inches long.

The chickens have access to plenty of gravel to help grind.

So, how long is too long?

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: god daughter called and needs work

The problem  is most of the people want the pay but do not want to do the work!!!  That has been my number one problem!!  Even the teen who worked last, he will never work for me again.  Never ever.   I am still picking up the trash from the yard and his water bottles, et... One bag in the back is heavy.  Guess he thought I wouldn't notice that he didn't put the trash where it belongs. Plus I ended up scraping most of the barn floor.  He wants to do it half way, then throw clean bedding down. Ugh... On the average I have found that  girls/teens work harder and take more pride in their work than the boys/teens.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Challenge a fox

To be totally, completely anti-gun is just irrational. To choose not to exercise your Second Amendment rights is your choice and I can respect that, but to be against me choosing to exercise my Constitutionally protected rights is just wrong and goes totally against what this country stands for. A gun is just an object, or more specifically, a tool. Any object (or tool) can be used for good or for bad and it is only the user who can determine that.  On our farm, a .22 rifle is an invaluable tool. Just this week, it was used to eliminate one of the groundhogs that keeps digging holes on our barn bank. I eliminated an egg-sucking 'possum from one of the coops a week or so before. The rabbits and groundhogs that decimated our garden in June were taken care of with that tool.

I am a totally, completely anti-gun person.

A few years ago I had 4 hens about 10 weeks old killed by a fox.  Two were gone, one was dead, one was fatally wounded and died about a week later.  A few night later, I hear a the chickens squawking - about 2 o'clock in the morning in the rain (of course) I grab my robe, run outside and there is a fox standing looking into one of the chicken coops.  I screamed, I ran at him - he ran a bit away and just turned around and sat there and looked right at me.  I went ballistic, I couldn't even find a freaking rock to throw at him, finally I just threw my flashlight at him.

Bottom line - as I was standing there in my impotent face off with this fox, I thought to myself - If I had a gun buddy you'd be dead.

The first time in my life I've ever wished I had a gun.  This fox be-deviled us for a couple of years.  She/he hasn't been around for a while now.  Knock-wood.  And no - I didn't get  gun.

Me too. It would be fun to try it out!  I'd definitively have air conditioned and heated barns.  I gave all cold water then ran into the house to cool off.  I had silkies over heating when I arrived home from my parent's.  It was a rush to get cold water down inside and outside, in all the pens and cages.  I'll have to do it again before I can go to sleep tonight.

Bobbye, I am with you too! Only in the uk. It is not easy or cheap to own a gun.
So I would use what ever is at hand. I have lots of tools around different areas of the garden that would be usefull weapons if needed!
Also I only have a small garden not a big farm.
Our dog Jack, who protects our chickens has access to the compound throughout the night as a preventative measure. He would be there like a shot if he heard a comotion.
Our garden is only about 100 foot long so we would be very aware if anything came for dinner. Jane & co
