Re: [CHICKENS-101] Incubating eggs

Before your next batch of eggs I'd get a dual humidity/temperature monitor.  Walmart sells them.

This is another question that pertains to my new post on Iowa Blues. I ordered 12 hatching eggs off of ebay. Only two hatched. I just went out and broke open the other 10 eggs and 8 had babies that were close to being fully formed. I have a hovabator forced air unit, automatic egg turner. As I live in the Northwest I did not add any water in the unit for humidity. During the incubation time our outside humidity was always around 50%. When I removed the eggs from the turner and placed them on the wire mesh I added water to bring up the humidity per what I had read I should do. I do not have any device to measure humidity. Also one day near the end I noticed that my incubator temp had fallen down to 97 degrees while I was at work.

What do you think I did wrong here?  Too much humidity or did that day of lower temp do me in? I'm leaning towards too much humidity. What a disappointment to see so many chicks nearly formed and then have them not hatch

Thanks,
Randy

Re: [CHICKENS-101] has anybody heard that 5 million chickens died

Do you have a source I could refer to, Sandie?  What I saw was that it was only 25% of the chicken raisers who have losses.  At 20,000 chickens per chicken house and 200 houses gone, and another 180 damaged that's a big loss.

Lower Alabama is also a big chicken raising area and I can see houses from our back yard.  There are currently 4 and the people are in the progress of building more but I can't tell how many more.  One of the farms on my road has about 10 houses.

Now I keep hearing different amounts.  But Alabama lost their chicken industry..  So I'm thinking that the price of chickens and eggs are going to be up soon.

And I think a few others were lost in other states.

[CHICKENS-101] Loss of vision - sorry a bit long

First, let me say, I mean no offense to those who breed birds for show. Not my thing personally, it's just the birds I bought.

Last Feb I bought my first Silkies from a guy who raises show chickens. 3 Splash, 1 Black, 1 Blue. Later in the year I noticed the Black was blind. My roo took good care of her and I always left the feeders and water in the same place so she could find them. A few months later, she passed on from the unknown.
So today while out feeding the tribe I noticed my Blue is either losing or has also lost her sight. She was having problems finding her favorite feeder, which is metal (I have 1 metal and one wood DH made me). Soon as she hears the food hit she's usually there.
I keep the feathers trimmed around their eyes, so it's not feather blockage. No injury, these are kept in an enclosed run, same brand of feed since forever. Not from TSC. It's Southern States brand.
A couple of months ago I purchased Silkie - all Splash chicks from someone who's birds came from the same guy.
Any ideas on why it's just the solid colors? All the other birds are healthy. Last Wed I had to start using Duramycin since one had a chicken cold and I didn't want it to spread, but she has been exposed to that before. And I need to get them thru this so I can move other chicks to that house.
This house has Silkies , a couple of bantams, a Giant, Cochin, Brahma, Polish. The chicks have a separate enclosure.

Any ideas?

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Incubating eggs

Randy, it might not be anything at all that you did. If the embryos were developing up until the 18th day and then died it was most likely a deficiency of vitamin B-12 in the hen's diet that caused it. But there is no excuse for not monitoring the humidity in an incubator. Digital hygrometer/thermometers are cheap and work well. 50% humidity is too low. It should be 60% until the last 3 days when it should be raised somewhat. The low temp might or might not be significant. It depends on how long it was at 97 degrees. An hour or even two probably would have little to no affect.

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Baby Chick

I'm with Renee on this one. It will probably live if it will be ok as an adult. And it will probably die soon if it isn't. So give it a few days and see if it can make it.

When I came home yesterday the chick was pretty much out of it. I immediatly put in in the incubator to warm it up. Didn't figure it was going to live. It is still alive today and active but seems to be very unstable on its feet and almost acts like it has vertigo. Any hope here or should I put it down?

As many of you know, I made an incubator out of a wine cooler recently. When I thought all was running well, I put 2 test eggs in. They did great! On day 18 I moved the two eggs to the Styrofoam incubator my son made for increased humidity and no turning.... my eggs tend to pip on day 20. Out of curiosity I candled them this morning to see if they internally pipped. I DROPPED THIS ONE!!!! Oh no!! My kids are going to be so mad at me.
So why I am staring at it in disbelief.... it moves!!!!!!!
So I put it back in the bator!!!
To be continued.........

[CHICKENS-101] Re: Why why WHY?

"Why, Why, Why" - there are several possible reasons birds eat eggs:
1. They are "floor eggs" - I.e. not laid in a nest.
2. The feed is deficient in Calcium and / or Manganese.
3. The feed is deficient in animal protein.
4. The nests are open to the floor - I.e. the birds can't "hide" when laying.
    A. There is not enough litter in the nests or the litter is not deep enough
        to provide cushion when laid.
5. There are not enough nests for the number of birds.
6. The birds are too crowded - I.e. not enough floor space, range space per bird.
7. The bird(s) are bored.
and finally sometimes a bird is just contrary!

What I'm feeding is  this........purina, I went looking for any other brand but nobody is carrying anything else.  So it's what has to be.

I've tried the dogfood story and that worked good......

Oh and tonight they had spaghetti, and bread.  I also had some corn that they liked it's not good for them in the heat......but this had bugs in it, and they loved the bugs.......

3 more weeks and they can move over to pellets but I'll have to go to texas for that.........and see if I can find something over there.

TS only carries purina.  I'll have to try some other source.

So I get to Tulsa Feed and buy Flea and tick shampoo, a dog collar,
extra rawhide bones and a couple of plants.
The next day Tulsa Feed gets Chickens in. Production reds, Orphingtons
and Americanas.
I'm broke! Chuck agrees to hold a half dozen Americanas and Orphingtons
for me until Tuesday.
10 minutes after Tulsa Feed closes today my friend comes over with the
cash he owes me. Now I have to wait until MONDAY!

Randy, I would take it out again, make sure it has enough heat and give it some water with a pinch of sugar in it and some crushed up feed. By now it is surely hungry.

Re: [CHICKENS-101] Little Giant incubator.

We were at the farmer's coop today.  I've made my mind to pick up the Genesis 1588  in a few weeks.  Hubby was with me and I showed him the LG priced at $50+.  Then there was the egg turner... another $50+ and the box for LG showed a thermostat control for available.  All that adds up close to the price of the Hovabator with turner I want.  No brainer.

BTW - Lilly the banty hen has two perfect babies now.  One black with a gold spot on its head and the other a gold patterned chick.  Both wonderful barnyard mutts and I am thrilled.  She's staying in the cage with her chicks till they get bigger.  I love watching her cluck cluck to her children telling them about the food and being a wonderful momma.
