Washing chickens yesterday to get ready to take to the Fair (today!) and daughter Kate went into the coop to grab a couple more .... suddenly she started screaming for me and came running out .... I thought maybe she found a dead bird or something ....

Apparently while checking on our 'broodys' she heard peeping .... and looked around and found OUR FIRST BABY lol!  We always have a few semi-broodies but she takes them off their nests daily and tosses them out for food, water and exercise and takes the eggs.  However ... the last few weeks, very busy with getting ready for college,  she hasn't been very diligent about collecting the eggs and apparently at least this one slipped by her.

We brought it inside and quickly set up a brooder box (20 gallon aquarium in the dining room).  I'm hoping there will be at least one more baby this morning so yesterday's won't be lonely, but if we don't get another of our own, Kate's 4H leader will bring us 1 or 2 today (she has some 3 day old bantam chicks that she purchased to display at the fair).

Here are a couple of pics of our little darling.....

(Oh ... and based on the egg shell fragment we found, we think the mom was either a silkieXbarred rock or a silkieXdominique.  Dad could have been the same barred rock or dominique, or araucauna or araucaunaX.)
