Georgia, I have most of my chickens on gravel and by the end of summer all will be. The gravel doesn't bother them at all and since I live in a very rainy climate, without the gravel the ground turns to mush. Gravel actually keeps the pens cleaner in summer too as the poo goes down into the gravel and just becomes part of the dirt underneath. No smell no flies. In the winter the rain washes it into the gravel and then into the ground so same thing.
Over the years I have had all my animals on gravel (actually 5/8 crushed rock) including my horses and it didn't bother any of my animals feet. In fact, I think they were healthier for it.
