[CHICKENS-101] Re: Rhode Island Red Question

If I may, I would like to join this discussion as Rhode Island Reds are a bit of a fixation of mine. First off no breed has been corrupted more than the RIR except maybe the Ameraucana. Today's production Reds are a just a shadow of the original. True RIRs are an endangered species and with good reason. Because of the fantastic egg production of the real RIR hatcheries sell chickens called RIRs even though the blood lines are very thin. The reason for this is to produce a good egg layer without terrorist tendencies. The result is a lighter, less aggressive bird with a high egg production to feed ratio. Th fact that every once in a while an RIR lays white eggs is unusual but not surprising given that it's most likely not a 100% RIR. The original RIR was a robust dual purpose bird that was quite capable of taking care of itself in rural New England. It was quickly followed by the New Hampshire Red with a comb less susceptible to freezing. Once again the name has survived better than the breed. Real New Hampshire Reds as just as dangerous as their Rhode Island cousins.
