Oh darn, if I could only remember either the book title or the author... It's a children's book but written for a little neighbor by a writer of otherwise adult literature. About a pair of crows whose egg is eaten every day by a big snake, until Mr. Crow borrows some paint (from the young neighbor!) and paints some smooth rocks. Snake is delighted to find *3* eggs instead of the usual one, gulps them all down, gets indigestion and ties himself into knots between the branches. Mrs. Crow then uses him as a clothesline to hang the diapers of her subsequently successful hatching!
I could go through my boxes of kids' books and locate it...
