Sorry to hear about your lose. I asked the same question about just finding one of my hens dead and Ol' George(for those of us who have been on here a while you remember Ol' George) responded by saying - sometimes they just die. Doesn't answer the question of 'why or how' but - it happens. Esp when they have looked and acted normal.
Yes hens will pile into the same laying box for some reason. I think they have favorites and if someone else is in there - well it's get out or I'm coming in!! They also like to lay in boxes where others have been - that''s why you'll see several eggs in one box and none in others. And yes they sometimes lay one in the poo collector or on the floor. I've stepped on a number of them that were on the floor and I didn't see them!!. I have one that likes to hide hers in a corner - not sure why but she does.
keep enjoying your chickens - you'll see all types of behaviors and about the time you think you've figured it out, like children, they will change!!
