How to raise Backyard Chickens: [CHICKENS-101] Re: chick feed and manure questions

You need to compost the chicken droppings before adding to your garden
because otherwise it is "hot" and will burn your plants. I've thrown
chicken waste into my compost pile for years (decades, actually) and have
never had a problem. The only manure I know of that can go directly onto
the garden is goat (and probably sheep, but I don't raise sheep so I don't
know for sure).

We have 17 baby hens, 8 wks old. They are on chick started feed now. When we
put them with the rest of the flock in a few weeks, how do we handle the
feed situation? Can the young 'uns just go from starter to layer? If we put
grower feed out when we move them, will the older hens eat the grower
instead of the layer? Will that affect the egg production?
Does putting fresh chicken manure on the veggie garden have any ill
side-effects, such as salmonella?
