Sorry to hear you are still grieving your lost dog. Deer are a giant pain. I think the best approach is to fence in what you can. Don't do anything to attract them and chase them away. I've had them walk right up on my back deck and eat every leaf off of my Meyers lemon tree to the point I thought I was going to lose the tree. I put my two dogs on the back deck during the day now and I haven't had a problem since.
Maybe in honor of your sweet dog that passed, you could find another good dog to love that would help you keep the deer away.
Good luck with the deer. It's too bad we can't somehow just put out deer traps for them. I consider them giant rodents.
