RE: [CHICKENS-101] Please help determine what this is. Pic attached

Coryza or Mycoplasma? I had a problem with my hens before Christmas, after introducing some new hens to the flock. My oldest hen was very badly affected. The vet I took the elderly hen to thought it was mycoplasma too and gave me Tylan to put in the water; with the old hen, we had her indoors and syringe fed her with omnivore support food (Emeraid). It all made little to no difference and I had her euthanased after a fortnight.

Since Christmas, I have had one hen which was still quite affected, although the swelling was confined to her sinuses, and in addition, some of the hens had been sneezing. I had my own vet out to see the hens and we swabbed and did a nasal wash on her and one of the others, whose face was slightly puffy.

Whilst we waited for the lab results the hens had 3 weeks of Baytril in their water and the hen with the swollen nasal passages was also treated with Metacam. They all improved rapidly and are fine now. The lab results came back negative for mycoplasma. Unfortunately the lab failed to test for anything else so we are none the wiser, and clearly no point in testing again unless it recurs. If you are testing I would be very interested in what you find out!

Hi All,

I have a 5yr old hen who's head is swollen, comb and wattles crusty and eyelids swollen.  She's lost feathers around her face and her head is hot to the touch, too.  She's acting a bit depressed but still eats, drinks and will peck at other chickens when irritated.  No diarrhea and vent is clean.

It kinda looks like dry pox and kinda looks like coryza, but just not sure.  I've attached a picture.  What do you think?

Thanks,

Kimberly
