I thought of the offset wire, too.
I saw something last night about a repellent that could be scattered around perimeters, under trees, etc. It's apparently largely garlic-based. Do you grow enough garlic to be able to sacrifice some? I don't know if the garlic could perhaps be pureed, and then mixed with a vegetable oil.
