Re: [CHICKENS-101] A few newbie questions

Hi Diane -

That is actually very helpful! I think I have 2 in mind for elimination, based on that. They are kind of stand-offish with me, and have actually bitten me. Soooo.... I think they will definitely be going. The other 2 so far are pretty indifferent towards me, and will let me pick them up and will eat treats out of my hand, etc. I hope they stay that way!

I have 2 Marans and 2 Rhodebars. It funny because one of the Marans and one of the Rhobebars are the standoffish ones, and the other Marans and other Rhodebar are the nice ones.

The Marans boys are soooo beautiful.... I really hope the one stays nice and calm so I can keep him around! He is so hilarious too. Whenever he sees me come outside, he runs over to see what treat I have for him (I often have a handful of dried mealworms), and then of course, everyone follows him, and it makes me laugh out loud every time to see them all running across the yard like that haha

They'll probably be fine for quite a while, until about next spring, or maybe sooner.   One will dominate the others.

Now, if you get rid of that one, the next one down the pecking order will take over, and maybe be just as bad.   What you need to do, unless you want to feed them all winter, is to figure out which ones get along with YOU, probably one or two, and sell the rest.   Anybody who goes after YOU is O-U-T as soon as possible.

Once they get it in their little brain to go after you, you can never trust them again, and they WILL hurt you.  Some people have better luck with roosters, but I never did.  Best roosters I've had are Marans and Silkies.  All came from MrMurray and have had laid back personalities.

That's my experience, many years and many breeds.
