Re: [CHICKENS-101] new flock

To be on the safe side, I'd say a week. Some will "know" sooner--and of course there are a few that are dim!

Two good tricks to have, though... First, when you do let them out the first day, do so only about an hour before sundown--that way they won't have time to wander too far (and get caught having to roost in whatever tree, shrub, fence, etc., they can find!) and are more likely to return to the roost they know; the next few days, you can let them out progressively earlier.

The second trick is to teach them to come for a treat when you call. (I use "Chick, chick" but whatever you are not embarrassed to have the neighbors hear!) It's pretty easy--just call and drop their favorite treats for them. Start when they are in the coop and right near you anyway, several times a day, and pretty soon you'll have them running when they hear the call. That way, if you realize they have scattered far away from the coop those first few days out, you can call them in just before sundown.
