"If you want to be 100 percent certain you're consuming GMO-free grains, your options include amaranth, barley, buckwheat, bulgur, einkorn, farro, grano, kamut, millet, oats, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff and triticale."
Wheat and barely are not GMO, GMO wheat seed is not on the market.

Rhonda, order your seeds from http://www.rareseeds.com/ guaranteed to be organic and that evil Monsanto won't benefit.
You can start your seeds during the winter in mini-greenhouses outside.

If you don't have any plastic jugs you can get plenty on freecycle. Just post a "want"

As Cathryn noted, buying cabbage(s) for more than a few chickens is out of the question. Mine only get it occasionally, on really bad days. I raised a few extra cabbages this year, although this last one I did have to buy. Next year, I'm going to try raising a lot more and see how they keep in the cellar. The biddies won't mind if the outside leaves are a bit limp!

Actually, once the garden was largely done for the year, I also was able to keep giving the chickens all the Brussels sprouts leaves and broccoli leaves until the garden was stripped--I think they were still getting them up through the end of November!

I may also see if I can ask for pumpkins on our local Freecycle, once Hallowe'en is done. (A friend gave me several after Thanksgiving--I put up several tasty jars of pickled pumpkin and toasted seeds, while the chickens cleaned up the peelings and soft spots.) Also plan to try sprouting some barley on a regular basis for the chickens, next winter--maybe this year, if i can get the seed in time.
