Barley has a hook like hull that can and does become imbedded in the crop of chickens/poultry, setting up irritation and causing death.  I would not trust barely even if it was sprouted unless the hulls/chaff is removed.  I cannot remember the whys of barley in feed but there are better grains.  There is info about barely in the 1000 calif things about agriculture- an old time book, in our links.

I just read this post about the barley.  Why will it kill birds?  I wanted to grow fodder for the birds.but not sure what to grow......wheat or oats?
