Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: dry ice/frozen water

Dawn, I completely and totally disagree with you.Whether Kristen used engine starter fluid or dry ice, the result is the same. A gas took the place of oxygen in their brains! Then they go to sleep, then a coma, then their body's shut down.   I know for a FACT that MSU diagnostic lab uses CO2 to put poultry down.  I was there when they did it and was given a lesson on how to do a necropsy by the vet. It was too bad that the people had grabbed the rooster by the crop because he wasn't sick, he had aspirated food from his crop.
I feel your post is very inappropriate, especially since Kristen is feeling bad for putting them down.  Sick chickens suffer as their air sacks fill with congestion and they can't breathe. Put them to sleep is humane.

Research this method before using it . There is info out there. Using dry ice is not recommended for animals other than mice and rats. You can use co2 cartridges but there are steps to take. IMO it is inhumane .  It seems a lot of rabbit breeders use this method to do away with bunnies and rabbits that won't show well. Kill a baby rabbit for the wrong color! Insane. And they do suffer if not done properly. Perhaps your chickens are just suffocating in that bin. I'm sorry-but this just doesn't seem right. Maybe giving your sick bird some comfort care until she passes on? An injured or suffering animal should be taken to a vet to be put down if no one is able to dispatch it quickly.
