Re: [CHICKENS-101] I have finally outsmarted them

 

Mine don't seem to use the stairs--they go up the hay-ladder! This year's lot don't seem to go up there as much, though, for whatever reason. Last year's flock (of which there are still 3) used the loft as their indoor play-yard, especially in the winter--as well as providing great hide-and-seek for hidden egg caches...

My latest problem is that I keep finding one egg a day with a crack or tiny hole in the small end (never through the membrane, though, so far). I think it's one hen who is so assiduous in tucking the egg underneath herself that she must poke the hole that way--although I haven't ruled out the egg getting cracked as it's laid by poking against the corner braces, or even the floor (whether I have hay or shavings in the nest boxes, the girls seem to create a bare spot on the middle of the "floor" of each box). Maybe I could try putting down a square of astro-turf or old door-mat in each box? I've seen something like that commercially offered in the ag catalogues. Any ideas?
