[CHICKENS-101] Re: dry ice/frozen water

Hi Cathryn -- Kristen here (the one w/ the whole flock sick; crop problem thread) -- Tonight we put 3 hens into a large plastic tote and there was enough room to put in a large coffee can w/ 2 bricks of dry ice. It's been 2+ hrs.. and the birds are in a coma but not dead yet! I'm hoping that they are not in pain. We don't want to open the lid too much for fear of letting out the CO2 (plus we have large garbage bags wrapped around the whole thing. We shot 2 hens the other night; my husband assures me it was quick and they didn't know what was coming. I just don't know which method I prefer now. I really thought these hens would die quicker than this.
Feeling quite sad...

As the body (brain dead) realizes there is no oxygen, it goes into convulsions. Cutting off the head leaves the chicken in the position of feeling excruciating pain until the brain dies.
