Frostbite is painful and stressful on a chicken, stress can cause sickness in birds. Frost bite, if extensive, may need blu kote on the damaged areas. Do not touch the frostbit areas or pull the frostbit damaged skin off, the area underneath flesh will end up getting frost bite too. My huge white rock rooster has frost bite on his wattle where he dunked it into his water dish getting a drink. I am guessing the two cockerels that were in with the flock may had something to do with it. (Feather sexing did not work at hatch. They are now up in a conditioning cage for soup.) My white rock's barn has 3 90 watt lights and ventilation. It was bitter cold in MI for several days in a row. I am treating his comb with blue coat every other day, keeping supportive vitamins in his water while he is healing, and top dress their 20% organic feed with a cup of organic puppy kibble. I've kept nutritious snacks going out to him/flock: rinds of cantaloupe with extra left on, baked sweet potatoes, and leaves off a bale of non GMO alfalfa to add extra nutrition in their feed and treats. I also put a tarp across the side of the building that gets hit by the wind the most even though it is built out of thick oak. HIs wattle needs to heal up before we get hit with the bitter weather that is arriving this coming week.
