EM, Children fed on junk food and sodas seem fine too, for awhile- they are alive functioning. Same with chickens, they are a domesticated livestock animal and need their nutrients and trace minerals.

Your friend is being cheap with no regard to her chicken's long term health. People like that really tick me off so I will not say more what I think about people who are too cheap to provide the nutrition their animals need. Birds as a general rule will not act sick because flock behavior tends toward killing sick birds.

It is my white Leghorn (I guess cross with something!) because I caught her in the box this weekend! She got up and there was the same colored egg! Which brings me to my next question..... I was looking into making my own non gmo feed but it is cheaper to buy the commercial made non gmo / organic. My friend just feeds a grain that looks like little red balls.... hers free range too. I didn't think this would be very balanced but her hens all seem to be fine. Anybody just mix up a few bulk grains or is it just cheaper to buy the commercial stuff? I would like to add some flaxseed in....
