I'm glad I'm not the only one who gives some cat food! I also mix the oyster shell in with the food, but I haven't had any egg problems. I also put out grit, although the hens free-range in part of my garden during the day.

I mix oyster shell into my feed every couple of months without any problems. When I want to increase my protein I add cat food and I hang meaty soup bones in the coop. It stops the cheickens from picking to.
