When you mix oyster shell into the feed, you change the mineral balance of the feed. Since your chickens cannot tell you how they feel or what they need, it is recommended not to do so. thepoultrysite.com has an article on mixing oyster shell and feed. It is considered a big NO.

I mix oyster shell into my feed every couple of months without any problems. When I want to increase my protein I add cat food and I hang meaty soup bones in the coop. It stops the cheickens from picking to.
