People are afraid of things they don't know much about. If airborne chicken diseases were an issue than we would probably have heard about it. Your neighbor may be referring to the bird flu or something like that. Maybe work on making the neighbor understand that he is not likely to catch something from a chicken that he wouldn't catch from the wild birds that come into or near his yard, they are just another bird.
