I was given a black silkie rooster who is very sweet fellow. He appears to be a young rooster. He does have wattles showing under his chin but has a very nice comb. He is black down to his skin, nice comb, with nice tight wings that sit up on his back -rare to get that in a rooster and needed for the pullets he will throw. He has a very nice round poof on his fanny. His neck is a little too long but his foot feathering is good. He had scale mites but I treated each foot with ivermectim, then gave him worminator a few days later. He will never have scale mites again unless he catches them somewhere from another bird.
His feet had favis. But he is being treated for it and should never have the problem again as long as his bedding is dry, not over poopy for a long time and or he isn't on antibiotics for a long long time, and his feet are kept covered in blue kote for a couple of months after I treated him. He is healthy - no germs that made a chick sick. His feathering condition indicates he has been fed layer feed, not fed for a silkie. His down is thick which is a very good trait and will shine up after he molts. The person who raised him is a good person and had the problem of him trying to whip his rooster father and be the head rooster. In desperation he ended up in a cage (we have all been there). I don't have a black to go with him. I have a partridge pullet I can spare, and or a dun from red, or a columbian gray, and that is it; silkies I had not planned on getting rid of. Not good mixes if you want chicks. If you just want a happy rooster then my beautiful girls would work. They are not free and are 5 each. A nominal price for long downed, typey, nice crested silkies I kept for myself. Any takers? PS His feet look much better today! Took him out in between rain showers and put him in the grass and chick weed for an hour. He is a very happy little guy and sang about the greens in his pen.
