welcome paula,
i am also new to chickens...have 5 pullets: 3 barred rock and 2 speckled sussex... i'm loving having chickens!!...never thought i would...it just gets better and better with them...they all went to bed last nite at 7:30ish...didn't have to chase any of them around to get them in for the nite...we are still covering the coop with blankets at nite b/c it is getting cool here at nite...disgustingly hot july and now a really cool nite august...they are busy and active and are getting more and more comfortable with me around them...yesterday, i was able to bend over, put down a piece of nectarine and they all came running before i moved out of the way... i have had them 1.5wks now...
i really can't figure out how old they are!!...there are no good pics in the books marking the different ages at different weeks and i can't find any on the internet... i wish that someone on the forums would give a good descriptions at various weeks... mine now are all feathered, except for one barred rock (matilda) ,she is still very fuffy on 1/2 her neck and her head, and she seems to be the slowest to ''get '' things...but they are all doing well and i am pleased...they are betwn 6-11 weeks..since there is different food for different stages, it would be nice to know...they are finishing our small bag of starter and i don't know if i should get more, or put them on the next level food...
keep us informed about your chickens..
sharon
