Re: [CHICKENS-101] why vegan?

That was the case with the first Ameracaunas I inherited. The people were getting rid of them since they hadn't started laying at over 30 weeks. I asked what they were fed — scratch, grass clippings and cooked vegetables. They were really messed up. The family proudly told me they shared their vegan diet with the birds. Of the five birds, two died in the first week. The other three survived. I still have them. They are not as robust as the rest of my flock, have never been friendly, but they are gorgeous and still great layers.

>Chickens that are fed only a vegan diet are malnourished. It is unnatural and does not provide what a chicken needs for proper growth, health, and egg production. Chickens are NOT herbivores. They are onnivorous by nature and left to their own devices will eat almost anything that doesn't eat them first.
