I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately, in that race to the bottom, someone got offended over the use of animal products in feed manufacture and said "there oughtta be a law.." and then some clueless lawmakers saw fit to legislate away the use of all animal related fats and proteins in the manufacture of livestock feeds. The result of that is we end up with the crap that Purina puts in a bag and calls Layena. They market it as "Sunfresh Recipe" and "free of all animal proteins and fats" which is unnatural food for a chicken. Some animal protein sources are very appropriate and work very well in poultry feeds but they now can't be used. Fish meal is one that comes to mind and it helps greatly with the production of fertile eggs for hatching. Boosting protein levels with soy is counterproductive because soy reduces fertility.
Every time someone declares "there oughtta be a law", some politician will take up the cause in order to justify their job, pass a law, and most of the time we end up getting screwed.

I'd happily eat those chickens too.
By bad I did not mean, "ew I am a human and I don't eat earthworms so the chickens shouldn't either". I meant questionable scraps from questionable farm practices. In the race to the bottom things are fed to the farm animals that no animal meant for human consumption should be eating.
