this is true for all LGD breeds, poultry is not their traditional livestock to guard. My Pyr was never safe with chickens either. The best thing to do when looking specifically for a poultry guardian is to get a proven dog that is known to be safe with poultry. Getting a puppy even when their parents are successful poultry guardians and the puppy grows up around poultry is no guarantee it will work out.
I have 2 that never met chickens until they were adults and they were trustworthy with them from the start, then I have a some that grew up around the chickens and cannot be trusted with them at all. It's not how they are being raised, it's what they are born with.
