Very cute story! We have one 4 month old male frizzle Serama who has just started crowing. He is definitely a member of the family and frequently cuddles with my SO in bed with us against my protests. Last night, he actually slept in bed with us on a towel because the fireworks scared him so badly....
I figured I'd share this weird story so you could get the other side of the spectrum!:)

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Life --and death -- on the farm
One of the things I like about this group is that the members seem to take a balanced approach to the care of their chickens. We understand that some folks keep their birds for pets and sometimes enjoy the extra benefit of eggs. Some folks raise their birds for both eggs and the meat. We don't get nuts when someone suggests that a sick or injured bird be culled or that the boys get sent off to 'freezer camp'.
Unfortunately I sometimes forget my place such as last night at a fourth of July party. One of the guests asked about our farm and if we ate our chickens. I shrugged it off and said 'yes. typically we'll send the boys to the butcher.' A visable chill went through the group. The asker then stated that she meant to ask if we were getting any eggs...oh. I smiled politely and said 'yes' while most of the people at the table got up to 'refresh their drink'. oops.
I wish some of these folks knew the conditions that their conveniently plastic encased chicken parts came from. It wasn't too many years ago that I remember getting a drumstick where the chicken's bone was so deformed that it was unlikely to have ever stood on its own. Did this bird get the loving care that our birds get today? doubtful.
Thank you for providing a healthy, balanced venue where we can discuss all things chicken (poultry). I, for one, am grateful.
