Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: predator (was Re: chick question)

Thanks Sara,
I'm learning that a serious barking session is indeed a reason to be on my toes. Twice when Bella's started really barking and I've gone out to find my cats mixing it up with a rattlesnake, also she warned me when a hen fell in the pond, when she spots coyotes crossing the back of the property — so she is doing a great job. I'm very happy about that. She's gotten better about not barking at random wild birds and at OUR CATS, lol, though she's still cat aggressive. It might be jealousy, she doesn't like them climbing on me and growls at them. That's my issue to resolve. She does not like the squirrel that comes for food every day. I'm okay with her running off the squirrel, but I'd like my cats to be included in our home.

She's very vocal - a yodeler I think they call it, I find it hilarious. But she'll yodel then go to the food bag, or to her leash, or the door to let me know what she wants — none of my other dogs have been that communicative. Also, an amazingly independent dog for her age.

Laura - not ALL pyrs bark. That is the thing everyone says, but mine
doesn't, and I've heard from others with similar experience. My Danny,
9 months old now, I think barked less than five times in his first 6
months. Its been a bit more since then, primarily egged on by my rescue
Australian Shepherd, who is constantly barking. But Danny is still
judicious - when he barks you know there is something going on - he
doesn't bark at anything moving, as Livie does. He barks at people or
vehicles he isn't familar with, or those he is uncomfortable with. He
barks at coyotes and hawks. But will let bunnies and wild birds go
their merry way with not a sound. When he gives an intense and
prolonged bark you know you are needed on the site immediately. He's a
really smart dog. Only barks when it is appropriated/needed. Sara SE
