Re: [CHICKENS-101] Putting chicks under hens

Laura, I do the same thing, at night, but hang around for an hour or two to make sure the chicks stay under mom. Bring a chair, headlight flashlight, and a good book.  Usually works well and I have never put out egg shells, just took the eggs my hen was sitting on from her so she'd get up with the chicks.

The Cochin has been on eggs for about 8-9 days now. The chicks will be from Meyer's June 3rd hatch. The babies will arrive sometime between the 4-6th. So, after dark, I can slip in the chicks and some empty shells? I do have a couple of shells from the batch of chicks that hatched on Wednesday (I just dug them out of the trash). I will give it a try and see how it goes. How many chicks can a standard sized hen comfortable handle raising? Again I realize that every bird is different but my Cornish seems okay with a dozen, I was thinking the same for the Cochin hen, no?
