[CHICKENS-101] Putting chicks under hens

I have 3-4 setting hens, one in particular will be on day 10-11 when my new order of day old chicks arrives next week. I have slipped chicks under a new mom with a hatch with success, but never offered chicks to a hen that hasn't hatched out chicks yet.

I realize that every hen is different and every time she sets is different, but is it absolute folly to try putting a few day old chicks under a hen that has been setting for only around two weeks? This particular hen is a black cochin and she's broody all of the time but has abandoned the nest before hatch a few times now.

Anyone tried this?

I was going to merge some of the new chicks with my Cornish, but the chicks hatched early (damn my poor math skills), she has 11 chicks already, and they will be a week old when the new birds arrive, so no go there.

Anyway, I'd love to hear anyone's experience in this area.
Thanks!
LQ
