That reminds me that several years ago I used a "found" golf ball which did seem to work...I'd rather forgotten that. On the other hand, I had some fake plastic Easter eggs in bright colors with goofy faces on them laying around last autumn, so thought I might try putting those where I wanted the girls to lay. The hens weren't fooled. So I tried wrapping one of the fake eggs with masking tape to hide the color and face. Still not fooled. Next I put 2 ounces of sand inside the fake egg before wrapping in tape...again, the chickens weren't buying it...they avoided it! The only way I've found to get the birds to lay in a desired spot is to put another real egg in that location, next time I check there's usually a couple additional eggs in the same place. I hate to sacrifice a half-dozen real eggs as nest eggs, hence my question about the wooden ones. Thanks, all, for your comments.
