Thanks so much for the information. I'm glad to know the dripping fluid from his nose/mouth and the gaping mouth were normal defense postures.
The opossum came back the next night and without the strewn bird cage papers to block my view I thought s/he didn't look quite as rough. I shooed it off the deck. I don't think it came back last night, but I've been up so late with the sick chick, I wouldn't know.
