[CHICKENS-101] Re: Questions on housing chickens

Thanks. I have parrots, so am pretty aware of the risks of cats to birds.

By the way, for those who may not know, cats carry a couple of bacteria in their saliva (that end up on their claws) that are deadly to birds. The teeniest, tiniest nick to the skin can set off an infection that kills birds very quickly. I can't remember the names of the bacteria, but the (lay) name for the disease is "Cat Scratch Fever." It can be fatal to humans. My youngest son almost died from some infection they never positively identified. The doctors at first were positive it was either leukemia or lymphoma. He had vasculitis--his poor little legs looked as if someone had taken a baseball bat to them. He did recover, but his titers for those two bacteria were high and they believe that it was "cat scratch fever" he had. He almost died, he was that sick.

I think that the safest way to keep my chickens will be some sort of tractor arrangement. I wanted free range, but I don't think that will be practical given my animal (the dogs) situation. I don't ever want my pit bull-type dog to learn what killing is.
