The Barred Rocks I've had have always been like that. The old colloquial name is Grizzles. The hens are like a bunch of sociable old women, and not much fazes them. The roosters---well. They're delicious, and freeze well too.
Funniest thing I ever saw was the day I heard all this noise from them. Up in back of the garden the hens were all standing around in a bunch----and they had a cat cornered in a small shed! The cat was a wild one that lives around here, housecats abandoned several years ago, and it was scared for it's life! I stood there and laughed, and the minute it distracted the hens that cat was GONE!

I have Barred Rocks--they seem quite hardy (mine free-range), and goodness knows they lay well (with virtually no change at all during the winter; the only extra light they've had is from the heat lamp on some really frigid nights). They are reasonably friendly--or at least they recognise that when I am carrying something it's worth coming at a dead run! (I didn't handle them as much as I probably should have as they grew up, so they aren't "cuddly.") One rooster was a bahstid and succumbed recently to, er, lead poisoning... But the other two have always been quite respectful.
