You might consider trying the pelleted pine bedding. I haven't tried it with the chickens, but I've used it with the horses for several years now. Comes in 40-pound bags which store easily.
PLEASE NOTE, though, you probably shouldn't put the plain pellets straight in with chickens. Their manure isn't enough to make the pellets swell and disintegrate like a horse urinating on it, nor are they heavy enough (like horses) to crush the pellets.
When you want the pellets to disintegrate immediately, open the bag and slowly pour in a couple of gallons of hot water. Go away for a half hour or so--when you come back, the plastic bag will be swelled right up so that you have ro slit it open--and the pellets will fluff apart pretty well once you dump them out. They won't be wet, either--just lightly damp. They'll dry out once they are spread out, and it will be like a screened sawdust.
