You do not want the bettles to get loose and get into your barns. Darkling beetles are the scourge of poultry houses.

I started this past summer. My terrarium is full of beetles right now with very few mealworms. I purposely let them morph into beetles to get my mealworm population up.
I think the cold weather has really slown down production, so I am a little disappointed since the mealworms were supposed to be my chickens protein supplement, in lieu of no insects to forage. Ah well.........new plan!
