Re: [CHICKENS-101] Fox proofing coop

Fox, coyote, raccoons, opossums, ET... can climb, burrow under, are strong and can tear up poultry fencing like it is wrapping paper on a present. What ever you build you need to pay attention to the fact that these animals are pure muscle and want to eat yur chickens. Think double fencing, woven fencing for one layer, buried fencing, and roo fencing. You can build your pen(s) with your coop inside or off to the side. How ever you do it you need to think about what else would want in. Mice and rats bring disease and internal/external parasites. Wild birds carry diseases along internal and exteranl parasites.
Before you build your coop see if you can figure out the angles on how you can protect your flocks.

Subject: [CHICKENS-101] Fox proofing coop

Hello,

We recently lost most of our small flock to a fox. We are planning on building a new coop this spring and I would like to get some ideas on how we should go about predator proofing it. We live in the middle of town so this fox came as a complete surprise. I guess we are not immune to problems such as this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Paula
