[CHICKENS-101] Silveira method of gardening with chickens...

A fellow named John Silveira has an article on the web about his
father's fenced chicken coop/garden. I am considering doing something
on this nature. It was actually suggested by an Amish friend/neighbor
who found the format in an ancient book one of his forefathers had left
in the attic back at turn of the century. My neighbor is hoping to do
this for himself, and has asked me if I would like this set-up at my new
place. I'm strongly considering it. I'd make the coop itself a little
larger than Silveira suggests or than tradition dictates - I use deep
litter and like there to be plenty of space to keep things clean and
aired out. I want 50 plus chickens. There will be two covered pens,
at least one of which will be closed off completely. The coop/covered
area will be between two garden plots, each large enough for the whole
flock to "freerange". These garden areas will be fenced but not
covered. The birds will scavange on one of the gardens for a year, then
in the fall, after harvest, get moved into the other garden. I would
differ from the layout Silveira suggests in that I would reserve the
area behind the coop itself for my perennials. They would remain off
bounds to the chickens through the rotations. So there will be the coop
with a covered run on each side, behind the coop will be my perennial
garden, then two garden areas on either side of the coop/run. I'll have
each garden in active cultivation every other year. I may wait to
bring the chickens back to the current year's garden till I have a cop
of beets/turnips or such put in for them to munch on along with clearing
up the rest of that year's garden. The then vacant side would get to
finish its composting over winter and be ready for spring planting. Is
anyone else doing something like this?
How is it working for you? Thanks, Sara
