Some one once posted a great article here about rooster training'. I saved it but now I can't find it! One of the main points was to always establish yourself as the head rooster. Roosters are not allowed to mount a hen in your presence or you'll knock them off. Just like the head rooster will do to the lower ranking ones. Pick up your rooster every time you go to the hen house and cuddle him. It totally takes his power away from him. You establish that you can pick him up and do whatever you want with him...
If he DOES attack you, holding him upside down by his feet for a while is humilating to him. My husband takes it a step further and holds the rooster by his feet and puts him on the ground. He struggles and flaps and the hens will come over and peck him! THAT has to be the worst thing to happen to a roosters pride! I have 12 Modern Game hens and 3 roosters all in the same large pen. They do get to free range every day for a couple hours. But one little rooster, my favorite, "Sachi", has taken to attacking my husband. It upsets the other 2 roosters, who then start fighting with each other. Sachi is my pet and never attacks me, but everytime my husband goes in the run, he goes after him. This is a new behavior for Sachi, who is the bottom rooster, by the way. We think he's doing this so that he will at least be above SOMEbody! But we're still workiing on this......I don't want to have to give up Sachi but for the sake of peace in the hen house, Imight have to.
