Re: [CHICKENS-101] Winter Litter

Mine still have complete access to the outside, although not too many of them are making use of the liberty.  Earlier this week, I had tried putting up a tarp to give them a small covered space (in addition to the coop and underneath it)--but the wind took it down in Thursday's snowstorm.  However, I may leave the tarp there--I pulled it back to give them some bare ground yesterday, coverred up again before it started snowing today.  I'm going to use your idea of adding something to scratch in, though!

I shredded bags and bags of leaves this fall, as well as saving bags of dry grass clippings.   The chickens seem to like those much better than shavings, much more scratching about.  If I run out, I can always use some shavings--and if there's a bit of horse manure, they'll love that! <g>

I also fixed them up with a whole cabbage (a carriage bolt through it, and hung from a strong cord).  Once they figured out what it was for, they had a good time pecking bits off it all during Thursday's storm!  So another is ready for tomorrow...
