Re: [CHICKENS-101] Re: Winter Litter

Marla, Wood floors can be linseed oiled, at the least motor oiled, then white washed and hold up well.
Of all of the water dishes I have used thru the years, Beacon brand 3 gallon water dish the best of the best. I have tried many different brands and it still goes back to beacon as being the best water dish for silkies. Mine are up on two pieces of 2x4, then a 4" high rubber horse dish with 3 pieces of 2"x2" in the dish, and the water on top of the the wood in the dish. When I have to use my heater bases I use pieces of 2"x2" or 4"x4", put the heater base on the wood, then my water dish. YOur silkies will not have to bend over to get a drink and their crests will stay drier. My H purposely did away with most of my beacons by breaking them. He bought 3.5 gallon pieces of junk that leak every where if not perfectly level because he likes them. I hate them. The 3.5 gallon will be good for the call ducks once their pens are set up by the woods on the slant. I am ordering 10 beacons today at Jeffers because their price finally went down to 15.95 each.
Do you find yourself having to heavily till in lime, wood ash, and sulfur the dirt floors to keep the soil sweet and prevent parasite over load in the soil?

I have dirt floor and cement floor and see a benifit with both. I love the cement's ease of cleaning you know where the bottom is. I can usually sweep it then shovel out the pile. It also keeps out digging predators. The only disadvantage I've found is it obviously would hold water if spilled but so would anything else but dirt. I have a pen of naughty silkies (or maybe we can blame poor depth perception on their crests) that dumped their water over daily until I started using the old heavy rabbit style crocks to water them. Man what a daily mess that was to clean up!
The dirt is easy to clean and drains well but most soil offers no protection from certain predators.
I have limited experience from my childhood with wooden floors and none with linoleum just that I would think they'd peck holes in it.
Good luck!
Marla
