The big question is who told her it was illegal to live trap them and do they really know what they are talking about? If that person was not from her state's (where does she live?) game comission/dept of natural resources, then I'd be very suspect of their advice. Predators killing livestock are generally fair game unless they are protected species like wolves, big cats, and raptors. Raccoons don't fit that category in any state that I know of. At close range (where most gun accidents occur) a 410 will make a bigger mess than a 22 bullet, especially a 410 slug.

A 22 shoots way farther than a 410 and in my book is way more dangerous. Laurie was told it was illegal to trap coons, so my use of a double negative use is fine.

Your writing was correct. You stated "It is not illegal to trap wild animals doing harm to livestock and poultry".
Not illegal = is legal - the two negatives cancel each other.
No one should own/handle/use any firearm without proper safety training. A 410 is just as dangerous as a 22 in the hands of the ignorant.
