Had a similar experience years go. We had a box full of chicks (25+) under the kitchen sink. The dog, think English Setter, would sit next to the box watching the chicks. Eventually they got loose, excaped, a mass breakout. We arrived to find the chicks running around the dogs front paws. The poor bewildered dog was afraid to move. We have since learned about 'brooders' and 'chick feed', temperature control' and the correct way to raise chickens. That bunch grew up under the kitchen sink before moving out to a corner of the barn. They lived a happy and productive life. Somehow I can't see that it gets much better than that.
